Hello!
This page is intended to show rising 6th graders what instruments are available to them when they join band in 6th grade. If you are not sure what instrument you would like to play, this is the best place to see your options. For many of these videos, you do not need to watch the whole thing to get a good idea of whether you might like to play the instrument or not. Some are quite long.

Alto SaxophoneThere are many different types of saxophones in band, but due to most 6th graders small size everyone starts on the Alto Saxophone. The 1st video does a more concise explanation of what a saxophone is. The second is much longer, but the beginning is more representative of the type of saxophone playing done in band class. Saxophones are heavier to carrier, and the largest of the woodwinds. You don't typically want too many of them in a concert band. Saxophones are vital to the Jazz Band.

French HornFrench Horn is a medium sized instrument, but can be awkward to carry. It is a difficult instrument to play, and I would only recommend if you have played piano, or another instrument beforehand. Being able to sing and match pitch can also be helpful. You don't usually want that many French Horns in a concert band.

EuphoniumA Euphonium looks like a small Tuba. It plays in the same range as the Trombone, but uses valves instead of a slide to change the note. They are quite large. You would likely have one instrument at home, and use a different one at school. You don't usually want more than 2-3 of these in a Concert Band.

MALLET PERCUSSIONMallet Percussion is how we begin learning percussion at Sutherland. We will work on Concert Percussion as the school year goes on. The mallet instruments in this video continue until 5:52 in the video. We are limited in the number of people who can play this due to the number of instruments we have.
